With a time of 30.831 seconds (175.148 mph), Jeb Burton grabbed his fifth career pole in the NCWTS and of 2013. Not too many people can say they have done what Jeb Burton has been able to do in his first full season in the NCWTS. Burton has five poles, one win, 3 top 5s, and 8 top 10s as he sits fourth in points. Burton has been a success story this year, but so has one of his running mates for the championship. Matt Crafton has top 10s in every race this year and even a win to boot. He sits first in points, but he has a mixture of rookies, veterans, and former champions following close in his tire tracks. The session was pretty basic in terms of spins, but the effects it has on the race tonight are major. Other than Ty Dillon and Jeb Burton, all the rest of the championship contenders qualified outside the top 5 along with the rest of the non Truck regulars and Truck regulars.
Chris Lafferty was the first driver on the track. Lafferty ran a very slow lap, but he will start in the race because only thirty six drivers attempted the race. The pole switched around a lot at the beginning of the session and it looked like it would be very late in the session when a pole winner would finally be decided. Justin Lofton was the first driver to establish himself on the provisional pole as he went out 22nd. He held onto the provisional pole until Miguel Paludo was able to best his time only four drivers later. His teammate, Jeb Burton, went out three drivers later and grabbed the provisional pole. With five good drivers to go, it would be interesting to see if he could hold the pole. After holding off good runs from James Buescher, Kyle Busch, Ty Dillon, and Brad Keselowski, Jeb Burton had claimed his fifth career pole.
The Burton name has been synonymous with greatness in racing. Jeb's father, Ward, is a Daytona 500 winner and was a very successful Cup driver. His uncle, Jeff, is currently in the sport and has a good many wins in the Cup Series. If the tradition continues, we could be looking at a really good Burton running in the Cup Series once again. Ty Dillon continues to prove he wants a Truck championship in his final season with another good qualifying run. Miguel Paludo continues to improve with a third place qualifying run and Justin Lofton laid down a solid lap in his return to the sport after almost a full season of absence. Brendan Gaughan rounded out the top 5 after the session. Like previously stated, the outside of the top 5 is filled with a lot of race and championship contenders. It should be a good race later tonight as a lot of drivers will look to get to the front as quick as possible.
