After outlasting nine cautions that took out many contending drivers, Kyle Busch was able to stand on top in victory lane after a hard fought win. Busch dominated the event, but he was not leading late after Austin Dillon took two tires on the final pit stop. Busch fought his way back to the front and took the lead along with the win. Busch, who has struggled his entire career at Kansas, now has a win to show for many terrible Kansas finishes. Along with winning, Busch became the first driver in over a year to win from the pole in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Matt Crafton followed up his win at Kansas a year ago with a second place finish. Joey Logano continued his pursuit of a Truck win, but he fell just short with a third place finish. Austin Dillon used strategy to try and win late, but he came home fourth in a rare Truck start. Tayler Malsam made his return to NASCAR with a fifth place finish in the Truck Series. The rest of the field was really jumbled up. The wrecks throughout the night put a lot of contenders in the back of the finishing order and a lot of lower funded teams in the front. The lower funded drivers include ninth place finishing Joe Nemechek, tenth place finishing Mason Mingus, thirteenth place finishing Jennifer Jo Cobb, and a good many others inside the top twenty like Justin Jennings, T.J. Bell, Norm Benning, and Bryan Silas. Along with those drivers, championship contenders like Ben Kennedy, Johnny Sauter, Ryan Blaney, and Brian Ickler all finished outside the top twenty after incidents. It was a battle all night long for most of the drivers and one of the best in the business came out on top. As the season progresses, this race could decide a lot of things and it was definitely worth watching.
Kyle Busch started on the pole. It was his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series pole of 2014. The race went green and Busch immediately jumped out in front, but the first lap wouldn't be completed under green as the first caution waved on lap 1. Timothy Peters went high entering turn 3 and as he came back down in turn 4, Brennan Newberry bumped Ron Hornaday Jr. Hornaday went around and slid towards the frontstretch. German Quiroga was beginning to slow down, but Spencer Gallagher couldn't see ahead of Quiroga. Gallagher piled into Quiroga and the two made contact with Hornaday. Gallagher had heavy damage that he couldn't drive away with while the rest of the drivers drove away and returned to the event with damage. No drivers received the lucky dog as the race was just beginning. The wreck was cleaned up quickly and the field was lined up quickly to really get the race underway. The race went back green and Kyle Busch remained at the top of the board. The field wouldn't get into a real rhythm as the second caution waved on lap 8. Brian Ickler suddenly broke loose in turn 4. His truck piled into the outside wall extremely hard. Ickler's truck had immediate heavy damage along the side. He managed to drive around to pit road and the garage, but his damage would need too much repair and he wouldn't return to the event. None of the drivers received the lucky dog. The field lined up once again for the restart and the Truck field would finally get to run some laps under green.
The race went back green and Kyle Busch was able to hold onto the lead. Immediately, the field began to fan out and race hard as the the laps began to click away. The cautions remained away and the racing was picking up. Everything stayed clean until Darrell Wallace Jr. came to pit road unexpectedly on lap 26. He had felt a vibration in one of his tires and he decided to come down pit road. His team changed all four tires and he returned to the track, but he lost a ton of time and the issue was still going on. Busch, Wallace's boss, continued to lead as the third caution waved just a few laps later on lap 33. Todd Shafer went for a spin in turn 2 after breaking loose. He slid up the track and managed to keep his truck out of the wall. He straightened it out down the backstretch and continued on without damage. None of the drivers received the lucky dog. The caution brought the first pit stops of the night and the first strategy of the event. Kyle Busch and Joey Logano took two tires while Matt Crafton and the rest of the lead lap drivers took four tires. Busch remained the leader, but it would be interesting to see if he could hold onto the lead.
The field was lined back up and Kyle Busch was once again able to hold onto the lead, even with two worn tires. Others began to battle behind him, but it was all Busch out front. The race went a few laps before the fourth caution waved on lap 49. Jimmy Weller broke loose in turn 2. His truck slid around and straight up the track. He backed into the outside wall and received heavy rear end damage. Weller was able to drive to pit road, but his damage was too heavy to continue. Jennifer Jo Cobb received the lucky dog. The caution brought a little bit of strategy. Joey Logano, who took two tires on the previous stop, came down for four tires while the rest of the leaders stayed on track. It would be interesting to see how Logano would do after ending up back in the pack. The field was lined back up and the race went green. Kyle Busch was once again able to hold onto the lead. Shortly after the restart, the fifth caution of the night waved on lap 56. John Wes Townley broke loose underneath Tayler Malsam in turn 2. Townley went around and up the track. He made contact with the outside wall and began to slid backwards. While avoiding, Bryan Silas bumped Ron Hornaday Jr. Hornaday went down the track and Ben Kennedy slammed into him. Hornaday managed to slow down and avoid the wall, but he had more damage. Townley and Kennedy drove away, but they also had damage. Norm Benning received the lucky dog. The cautions were coming out quickly and the field was wondering when the race would be able to move into a rhythm.
The race went back green and Kyle Busch remained the leader of the race. Just after the restart, Busch was able to hold onto the lead as the field fanned out behind him. The race only went a few laps before the sixth caution waved on lap 69. Brennan Newberry lost a tire entering turn 1 due to a tire rub. He slid up the track and slammed the outside wall hard. His truck had damage after the wall contact and he made it to pit road to change tires. John Wes Townley received the lucky dog. The caution brought some more pit stop strategy. Joey Logano and Austin Dillon took fuel only while Kyle Busch, Ryan Blaney, and the rest of the lead lap drivers took four tires. Logano was the first driver off pit road and he would look to hold the lead from Busch. The race went back green and Logano managed to hold onto the lead after a tough battle with Kyle Busch. Logano looked to drive away from the rest of the field, but the seventh caution quickly waved on lap 76. Brennan Newberry lost another tire entering turn 3. He slammed the outside wall even harder and his right side practically caved in. He drove away, but the damage was too much to continue on. Norm Benning received the lucky dog. All the leaders remained on track except for Johnny Sauter because he had loose lug nuts from the previous stop. The race was approaching halfway and it looked like a battle would continue to rage.
The race went back green and Joey Logano managed to hold onto the lead. His teammate, Ryan Blaney, began to fly to the front and he began to battle with his teammate for the lead on lap 84. Just as the battle began to end, the eighth caution waved on lap 85 and Blaney's night would take a turn. Blaney caught the apron in turn 2 and broke loose. He slid up the track and looked to have saved his truck as he backed into the outside wall slightly. Behind him, Johnny Sauter and Tyler Young made contact. Both went flying up the track and they slammed the outside wall hard. Young piled into Blaney and Blaney went into a tailspin. All three drivers had too much damage to continue as Blaney and Young stopped on track and Sauter went to the garage. Norm Benning received the lucky dog. The caution brought some more pit stops and some more strategy. Austin Dillon, Jeb Burton, and others came down pit road for four tires while most of the leaders stayed on track. It would be interesting to see how this move worked as the race progressed on.
The race went back green and Joey Logano was able to hold onto the lead. The field fanned out on the restart, but Logano remained the leader as the laps started to click away. After a nice run, Kyle Busch began to maneuver his way to the front of the pack. He made his way up to Logano and passed him for the lead on lap 112. Busch ran away from the field and he moved into a rhythm as green flag pit stops loomed. Joey Logano was the first to make the move to pit road around lap 124. Just after Logano returned to the track, the ninth and final caution waved on lap 126. Bryan Silas made contact with John Wes Townley in turn 2. Silas went up the track and backed into the outside wall. Silas drove away with damage, but he could continue on after repairs. Jeb Burton received the lucky dog. Logano, who pitted just before the caution, was able to take the wave around, but he would have to start from the back and make a charge. The caution brought the final pit stops of the race and a lot of strategy. Austin Dillon took two tires while Kyle Busch, Matt Crafton, and all the other lead lap drivers took four tires. Dillon came off pit road first and took the lead for the first time on the night. He would have to fight off the pack and it would be a tough final forty laps.
The race went green for the final time and Austin Dillon managed to hold onto the lead. Dillon looked to drive away, but Kyle Busch and the rest of the field was chasing after him. The laps began to click down and Dillon still remained on top as thirty remained. Kyle Busch began his charge, but Dillon was still content out front. The laps began to click down some more and Busch really began to hammer on Dillon. With about twenty laps to go, Busch's four fresh tires took the lead away from Dillon's two fresh tires. Busch ran away as Dillon fell deep in the top five. Busch wasn't out of the battle yet as Matt Crafton looked to close up on him. Soon, only ten laps remained and it looked like Busch had the win in the bag. Five laps to go clicked on the board and Crafton was running fast behind Busch, but he was still far away. Busch cruised through all four corners cleanly in the final laps and he took the white flag easily. He maneuvered around the mile and a half Kansas Speedway to the checkered flag with Matt Crafton running three seconds behind him. Busch managed to break a long bad streak at Kansas with a win.
Kyle Busch's Kansas struggles have been well documented. A season ago at Kansas, he experienced trouble in all three series. In the spring in the Cup Series, he wrecked hard with Joey Logano and finished deep in the field. In the spring in the Truck Series, he wrecked also and finished very deep in the field. In the fall in the Nationwide Series, Busch finished in the top five, but he wrecked Brad Keselowski and the two shared some words as Keselowski ran towards pit road, which shook Busch's confidence. A day later in the Cup Series, Busch spun on the first lap and ended up wrecking again en route to a pretty bad finish. In 2014, though, his record at Kansas is starting better with a pole and a win in the Truck Series. Matt Crafton tried to follow up his win at Kansas a year ago with another victory, but he came home second. Still, Crafton grabbed the points lead after three events. Joey Logano fought hard for his first career Truck win, but he came home third after strategy messed him up late. Austin Dillon led most of the final few laps of the event, but he came home fourth after two tires couldn't propel him to the win. Tayler Malsam made a brilliant return to the series with a much deserved top five. Behind the top five, many of the Camping World Truck Series championship contenders fought wrecks and mechanical problems all night. Most of them finished in the back and lost a good many points, but they will have a chance to bounce back in just a few days at Charlotte. Charlotte has been home to a few Friday night tempers flaring and it will be interesting to see how the race goes. Will Kyle Busch repeat at Charlotte and go back to back, will Matt Crafton come back to take a win following his second place finish, will Brad Keselowski finally take his first Truck win, or will another driver bust through at home? We only have to wait a few days to find out these answers and a whole lot more.
